Keynote: Human-Centered AI: Ensuring Human Control, Enhancing Human Performance
A new synthesis is emerging that integrates AI technologies with Human-Computer Interaction to produce Human-Centered AI (HCAI). Advocates of this new synthesis seek to amplify, augment, and enhance human abilities, so as to empower people, build their self-efficacy, support creativity, recognize responsibility, and promote social connections.

Researchers, developers, business leaders, policy makers and others are expanding the technology-centered scope of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to include Human-Centered AI (HCAI) ways of thinking. This expansion from an algorithm-focused view to embrace a human-centered perspective, can shape the future of technology so as to better serve human needs. Educators, designers, software engineers, product managers, evaluators, and government agency staffers.

can build on AI-driven technologies to design products and services that make life better for the users. These human-centered products and services will enable people to better care for each other, build sustainable communities, and restore the environment. The passionate advocates of HCAI are devoted to furthering human values, rights, justice, and dignity, by building reliable, safe, and trustworthy systems.
The talk will include examples, references to further work, and discussion time for questions. These ideas are drawn from Ben Shneiderman’s new book Human-Centered AI (Oxford University Press, February 2022).

Keynote: Neurodiversity in Inclusive Design
1 in 8 people is considered neurologically diverse, however, so many experiences and environments are still not designed to accommodate common neurological differences. These experiences can make it challenging to navigate, cause frustration, and in some cases, completely exclude the individuals from engaging. Designers need to increase awareness and identify common cognitive differences to anticipate barriers and design solutions that meet their needs. As inclusion continues to gain importance in cultural discourse, designers need to consider how different brains process, absorb, and retain information in order to truly create an inclusive experience.

Takeaways:
  • Understand the neurodiverse audience and common barriers they face in both the physical and digital space.
  • Consider neurodiverse challenges and differences when creating inclusive policies and practices
  • How to create flexible and mindful experiences that allow neurodiverse people to engage and contribute
  • Provide foundational principles that you can incorporate into your teams, workspace and design process to build an experience that allows neurodiverse individuals to thrive.

Keynote: Do no harm - How the health care sector is taking climate action
The health care sector is on the frontline of climate change, with patients bearing the shifting burden of disease attributable to climate change along with injuries and illnesses related to extreme weather events. These climate-driven, extreme weather disasters can also disrupt health care infrastructure, access, and delivery, at times when communities rely most on hospitals to remain open and operational. The health care sector has a healing mission; however its operations contribute to climate change and the burden of disease, with the health care sector responsible for 8.5% of US greenhouse gas emissions, which is not in keeping with the oath to “first, do no harm.”  As trusted messengers, health professionals have a historic opportunity to use their influence to promote climate-smart health care and climate solutions to protect public health.

Learning objectives

Participants will learn:
• How climate change impacts health
• How extreme weather events impact health care delivery, access and supply chains
• The environmental impact of the health care sector and opportunities to reduce the impact and promote resilient, climate-smart health care
• Why health professionals an be powerful advocates for climate solutions

Keynote: Human-centered Business with JTBD
Today, consumers have real power: they can research your company’s background, compare customer ratings, and find better alternatives all with a simple tap. Increasingly, opportunities for growth come from the outside, from beyond the borders of an organization.

But despite a clear customer-centric imperative, traditional businesses have largely failed to change how they think about providing value. Part of the challenge is that resting a growth strategy on fuzzy concepts like “needs” is daunting. Risk-averse organizations struggle to grasp the customer perspective and align to it.

JTBD helps shift a collective mindset, from focusing on the organization and its solution to focusing on customers and their needs. More than a particular method, JTBD offers a way of seeing your markets, your organization, and your strategy.
This presentation will cover core concepts of JTBD and position it as a framework to help organizations become more human-centered.

Keynote: Co-creating community-led solutions for social work with Latinx populations
Rocío Calvo, Founder of the Latinx Leadership Initiative (LLI), housed within Boston College’s school of social work, focuses on developing social work leaders equipped to work with Latinx communities on sustainable solutions for complex problems. The pandemic exacerbated long-standing inequities in health care access and quality for Latinx communities. Rocío will tell the story of how she conceived the program almost 10 years ago and grew it into what it is today - a statewide resource. She will highlight how the program collaborates with different communities to create culturally and linguistically congruent programs to improve the health care experience of Latinx populations.

Keynote: Age-inclusive Design is Foundational for Global Health Equity
One in six people globally will be aged 60 years or older by 2030. Tech giants and Agetech start-ups are starting to focus more on this growing demographic.  But design for older adults requires an understanding of the complex intersections of age & ability. Age-Inclusive Design employs human entered design methodology, accessible design standards, plain language and positive imagery to create a framework to understand the intersection of age + ability, in order to create better technology products/services. AARP is supporting innovators in understanding opportunities, illuminating trends, creating global networks and co-creating best practices with industry leaders in order to ensure that the growing marketplace of digital products effectively meets the needs of older adults into the future.
