My Mental Health Crisis Plan: A Tool that Redesigns Information Access so Individuals Have a Voice During a Mental Health Crisis

While many technology-based mental health tools exist, very few focus on helping people who have serious mental illness (SMI). Even fewer help individuals when they experience a mental health crisis. New and innovative digital tools are needed to design better access to mental health services for people who have SMI. My Mental Health Crisis Plan is one of those innovative tools. It is an app developed by SMI Adviser that allows individuals who have SMI to create a psychiatric advance directive (PAD) that guides their treatment during a mental health crisis. My Mental Health Crisis Plan redesigns the current, challenging way that PADs are created, stored, shared, and accessed. It offers a free, accessible way for individuals, family members, and clinicians to collaborate, support people in crisis, and provide person-centered care. The app is an evidence-based, innovative solution that designs new pathways to access information at the most critical time. My Mental Health Crisis Plan wraps in a focus on:

Trust -- by incorporating best practices around privacy, the app allows individuals to easily create and share sensitive mental health data in a secure way

User-Centered Design -- careful attention to detail around UI/UX, health literacy, and accessibility ensures that the app is highly usable and engaging for people before, during, and after a crisis

Implementation -- through hands-on training and educational resources that accompany the app, SMI Adviser helps encourage activation at points of care for people who have SMI

This session is led by experts in digital health and design on the SMI Adviser team. They take you through the story of how My Mental Health Crisis Plan redesigns access to information that is key to person-centered care during a mental health crisis. SMI Adviser is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and administered by the American Psychiatric Association.
