The Tech Incubation team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has explored a variety of hardware and software solutions to create applications in Extended Reality (XR) - a term that captures the spectrum of technologies that range from completely immersive Virtual Reality to Augmented Reality. This allowed us to experiment and innovate on new ways of providing novel and immersive experiences, as well as enhancing and augmenting telemedicine. We believe that our prototypes demonstrate that this technology could serve to humanize the experience of cancer care by 1) using simulation to better prepare patients for their treatment process, 2) providing emotional support and motivation to our younger patients, by engaging them through novel interactions with virtual AI companions and 3) helping patients and their caregivers feel more connected to their clinicians. We will describe how we have used these and other tools to rapidly develop XR proofs of concept.
